234: Having Confidence – Confidence in the Holy Spirit

Where does your confidence come from and what are you most confident about in your life? Are there any definites in your life or lots of things that you hope might be true but are not totally sure? How can the Holy Spirit help us in the here and now to live with confidence in God?

Words for the Week

2 Corinthians 1:21-22

Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us,  set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.

2 Corinthians 3:4-5

Such confidence we have through Christ before God. Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God.

Writer’s Thoughts

As a Christian who seeks to love people, and show them that everyone has an open invitation to come to know God, I find it hard to be openly black and white about my beliefs. But in my inner life I have some foundational things that I believe that shape my everyday thinking and how I act. So how did those come about and what are the things that I can be sure of? Here are two that link in with this week’s bible verses:

There is a clue in that first short passage where it says that God “set his seal of ownership on us…” I know that I belong to Him, that the one certain thing in my life is that I’m His and that will never change, life is not certain but Eternal destiny is. I can’t show you how I know; I can show you some evidence in my life that I think points to it being true, but that would just be how I see it. God’s spirit has done something deep in me that has changed me forever. I doubt many other things but never that.

The other thing that I am confident in, and this has been something won through many a battle, is that there is nothing I can do on my own, that will ever be better than what God can do with me and through me. Trust me, I have tried! Asking for His help and believing that the Holy Spirit is able to come into any situation and do something more than I could do on my own is a foundational truth of our faith as Christians. I so often behave like it’s all up to me, but the moments in life I treasure are not the easiest ones, but the ones where I remember that I was never meant to do it on my own.

Oswald Chambers

Own it personally…

Do you know that, whatever else comes and goes in this life, you belong to God and will be His for eternity? If not, please find someone to talk and pray with you, to ask the Holy Spirit to confirm that to you and fill you with His new life.

Even if you have done it before, do it with someone again so that you can have that confidence. And if you are not sure that the Holy Spirit will come and help you then try it out this week. Try inviting him into your day, give him permission to be with you and speak to you and then during the day keep asking for his help and see what happens.

Speak it Out – Pray and Prophesy

Daily prayer:

“I need you Lord. I know that I need you today, please help me. Thank you that you have promised never to leave me & that you will always love me, help me to remember that today. Thank you that you can do more than I can ask or imagine & I invite you now to come with me today, please bring your kingdom ways & power into every situation I will face. I pray all this in Jesus name, Amen”
